Although Slovenia is one of the smallest countries in the world, its rustic culinary sophistication tantalizes even the most demanding tastebuds. When travelling through Slovenia, one can't imagine to see such crystal clear rivers, snow capped peaks and the ancient cultural monuments. While travellers around the world flock to see its natural beauties, Slovenia has a lot more to offer to a hungry turist.
All you really need is look beyond those travel brochures and explore this magnificent ancient country by yourself. While turists can go for a swim at one of the most beautiful beaches and lakes in Europe, the culinary enthusiasts are able to take advantage of its rich cuisine.
While travellers can get inspired just by visiting Lake Bled with an island castle in the middle of the lake, one of the best ways to explore the tastes of Slovenia is going straight to its capitol Ljubljana. When cruising around the ancient Emona (name of Ljubljana from the Roman times), you can go to one of the many restaurants, situated along the river Ljubljanica. Most of them offer an authentic Slovenian cuisine, filled with a bit weird, but mouth-watering dishes like Gibanica, Kranjska klobasa, Ajdnek, and many more.
Some of the best places to eat in Ljubljana are the almost legendary As, the delicious JB restaurant, a Ljubljana castle-situated Strelec, all of them offering an extraordinary culinary experience.
While eating one or more of their tasteful dishes, don't forget to sit outside and enjoy the city view, trying to imagine how it felt like eating there a couple of hundred years ago, when the ancient Romans marched through this great city.
Although one could argue that Slovenia has borrowed some of its ingredients or even recipes from the neighbor countries Italy, Austria and Hungary, I disagree. Maybe you can experience a similar taste here and there, but the vast majority of Slovenian culinary is authentic. I should know, because Slovenia is my home country.
Also, you'll never have to worry about canned foods, because Slovenia is well known for its obsession with fresh, locally sourced ingredients. When made with some unusual combinations and served with a so-called Slovenian touch, the result is one of the greatest foodie destination on the planet.
